This trip is a bicycle ride on paved roads from Jemez Springs to the Gilman Tunnels and back. The Gilman tunnels are located in the most scenic section of the Guadalupe River Box and were originally blasted out of the rock in the 1920's for a logging railroad.  The cottonwoods along the route will hopefully be near the peak of their fall colors, making it a most beautiful ride.

This hike is adjacent to the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge near Socorro, NM.  The Chupadera Wilderness National Recreation Trail traverses a variety of ecosystems, starting within the Rio Grande river ecosystem, extending through the high desert, into the grasslands of the Polvadera/Chupadera mountain range, and topping out on Chupadera Mountain.   A  very cool transit of the various ecosystems.

This is a one night backpacking trip into the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area under the Harvest full moon. The backpacking is not particularly rugged or difficult but requires that you carry all the water you will need for a 24h period. At a minimum, you should plan on carrying a gallon of water away from the trailhead.

In past years, several of us have gone on walking and culinary tours in Italy with guide David Morton, who runs a tour company called Roman Roads (https://www.romanroadwalks.com/). You can see some of our friends on his web page. We are organizing a trip this fall once again, on a route that travels from the mountains to the seaside. Trip details can be found at https://www.romanroadwalks.com/newsletter31.html. There is a good walk, cultural exploration, and fine meals every day.

We will be leaving the ski hill parking lot at 4:30 pm, a change in start time due to the earlier sunset time.  This is a potluck dinner so please bring food to share, your own plates, utensils, and beverage. As usual, bring some warm clothes and rain gear if the weather changes.  It has been much cooler at the top the past few weeks. If the trip needs to be canceled due to weather conditions, I will send out  a notice by 4 pm.

Please RSVP to 505-660-2345 or efmillsnm@gmail.com
