This hike is described in Coco Rae's book on hiking in the Valles Caldera National Preserve (page 98), in a far corner of the preserve that I have not yet seen. So let's explore it. She says "A moderately challenging out-and-back hike in one of the least-visited areas of the Preserve, gently climbing from the Valle San Antonio to reach the northwestern boundary...". Depending on how far we can drive in, the hike is 9.7 to 12.3 miles in distance, and 1484 to 1724 feet of ascent. I have reserved backcountry passes for two cars, one of which will be mine - we will need a second car that can handle the dirt roads at least as well as an Outback. We will also need park access - one parks pass per car will do. We will leave Los Alamos at 8:00 AM, meeting point to be announced. We will plan to be back in Los Alamos no later than 6:00 PM; if we are running short on time, we can turn back at any point on the trail. Participation will be capped at 8 because of the car limitation. Bring lunch, water, sun protection, and clothing suitable for the whole range of possible weather conditions. Let me know if you would like to join in.
