This is another classic hike in the Valles Caldera National preserve, making a big loop through Obsidian Valley, along Valle de Los Posos, then hiking along the northern edge of the Valle Grande itself for the last half of the hike. The route is described in Coco Rae's book (page 58). It should have nice views almost throughout. Rae says "A gently rolling trail with minor elevation gain, passing through Obsidian Valley, forested groves, seculed backcountry valleys, and some burned areas, with great views...". The hike is 13.8 miles in distance, so we need to spend the full day. I have reserved backcountry passes for two cars, one of which will be mine - we will need a second car suitable for good dirt roads. We will also need National Park access - one parks pass per car will do. We will leave Los Alamos at 7:30 AM, meeting point to be announced. We will plan to be back in Los Alamos no later than 6:00 PM. Participation will be capped because of the car limitation. Bring lunch, water, sun protection, and clothing suitable for the whole range of possible weather conditions. Let me know if you would like to join in.
