The Caja: 100,000 Acres of Fun

Please join us Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Fuller Lodge (Los Alamos) for an exciting presentation by Diedre Monroe, a Los Alamos local. Deirdre Monroe will talk about trails in the Caja del Rio, a 100,000 acre expanse of public land just west of Santa Fe, NM. Monroe has published a trails map of the Caja, which will be available at the meeting.

Rachel began kayaking as a wee little thing, making her first forays into the river with her family as a young child. Through a series of events, she became avid about the sport of whitewater kayaking and the many opportunities it offers.

In June of 2011, Jason Halladay, Mark Schraad, Sarah and Andy Thien took a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to an unusually mild-tempered Mother Nature, they managed to climb and ski four classic volcanoes: Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Hood.

Dave will provide a slideshow of a year in review, detailing his work in guiding and patrolling from Taos to Everest, with a little Antarctica, Africa, Alaska and Mt. Rainier thrown in.

December Potluck and Potpourri

The December meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers will feature its annual “potpourri,” a special meeting featuring a potluck dinner and a collection of short presentations from Mountaineers who took a notable trip in 2014 and have stories and photos to share.
 
The Mountaineers will provide barbeque from Bob’s Bodacious and cake from the Chocolate Maven. Others are asked to bring side dishes, desserts or main course alternatives as they like.

Denali, aka Mt. McKinley, is the highest peak in North America. More than 20,000 feet tall, with temperatures framed by its proximity to the Arctic Circle, winds that can top 10 miles per hour, and an unforgiving landscape of glaciers and crevasses, Denali, of course, is a siren song to adventurers and mountaineers.
