December Potluck and Potpourri

The December meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers will feature its annual “potpourri,” a special meeting featuring a potluck dinner and a collection of short presentations from Mountaineers who took a notable trip in 2014 and have stories and photos to share.
 
The Mountaineers will provide barbeque from Bob’s Bodacious and cake from the Chocolate Maven. Others are asked to bring side dishes, desserts or main course alternatives as they like.

Denali, aka Mt. McKinley, is the highest peak in North America. More than 20,000 feet tall, with temperatures framed by its proximity to the Arctic Circle, winds that can top 10 miles per hour, and an unforgiving landscape of glaciers and crevasses, Denali, of course, is a siren song to adventurers and mountaineers.

“Ain’t lost nothing up there”, but found a Grand Adventure

The Los Alamos Mountaineers' October meeting wuill present a first-hand account of the club's first organized trek to the Grand Teton in Wyoming in more than a decade.

Speaker Michael Altherr will describe the trip preparations and results at the meeting, 7 pm Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos. The meeting offers, in addition to the featured talk, refreshments and casual conversation, as well as updates on upcoming trips and safety advice learned from outdoor adventuring.

The September meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers will feature a presentation by Carol Kotchek, a staff member at the American Alpine Club who has been climbing for more than 30 years, including a number of years working a number of classic climbs in the Yosemite Valley.

Live to work or work to live? That’s a question that some of us will be left pondering after the August presentation at the Los Alamos Mountaineers.

 

The monthly meeting of the LA Mountaineers begins 7 pm Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos. The meeting starts with refreshments, reports on recent and upcoming LAM-sponsored trips, a “safety minute” courtesy of one of the members, and a feature presentation.

 

Bandelier Superintendent to Address LA Mountaineers

The meeting, which is free and open to the public, starts at 7 pm Wednesday, July 16 at Fuller Lodge with refreshments and casual conversation, followed by reports on recently completed and upcoming trips.

Jason Lott, Superintendent of Bandelier National Monument, is the featured speaker at the July meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers.

The talk will be at 7:30 pm Wednesday, July 16, at Fuller Lodge.  The talk will follow the business portion of the meeting, which will include information on recent and upcoming LA Mountaineer-sponsored trips and outings.

Bill and Zack's Excellent Adventures**

If you've ever wondered what there is to do in Los Alamos, then this month's presentation by the Los Alamos Mountaineers could be your answer.

Long-time Mountaineers Bill Priedhorsky and Zack Baker will present "Out and About in Los Alamos," a compilation of information from excellent adventuring at local trails, creeks, peaks, monuments and crags.

The presentation will be at 7:30 pm Wednesday, June 18, in the main room at Fuller Lodge. The presentation is free and refreshments will be provided.

For those who like to get off the beaten path there are endless discoveries awaiting in the desert southwest.

Outdoor adventurist Dave Rice has spent more than 50 years exploring the outdoors and following his interest in Native American archaeology. At the May meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers, Rice will describe several sites that are easily accessible from Los Alamos and the discoveries a visitor might find there.

Canyoneering Adventures & Technique with Rich Carlson

The Los Alamos Mountaineers are pleased to welcome Rich Carlson for an evening of canyoneering and technical expertise. Rich will give a general introduction to canyoneering, what it is and the basic skills and tools required to navigate canyons safely. He will then focus on a recent canyoning trip to Nepal which will show you the hidden treasures that canyoneering unlocks for adventurers, and why more and more people are getting hooked on canyoneering every year.
