This is a strenuous but enjoyable hike to a 12000+ feet peak north of Taos Ski Valley. We will have spectacular views in all directions, remnants of mining activity, and summer wildflowers.  We start at Taos Ski parking lot and follow the Bull of Wood trail to the junction to Long Canyon trail. Following this steep and shady trail, we climb gradually out of the canyon to the treeline. The final 1+ mile is all above the treeline with breathtaking views.

This is the first in a series of summit hikes to peaks in our local Sangre de Christo range. We will hike via the Windsor trail from the Santa Fe Ski Basin to the summit of Santa Fe Baldy. This will be a strenuous hike of ~13.5 miles with 3,500 feet of elevation gain. We will need to get an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Los Alamos area participants will meet at Sullivan Field at 7:00 AM. Santa Fe area folks can meet us at the trailhead at the north west side of the Ski Santa Fe parking lot at 8:15 AM.

This is becoming a popular hike, but I haven't done it, so I'd like to give it a try. I'm going off Barbara Calef's description:

"This is a point to point hike and will require a short shuttle.  We will drop off passengers at the first gate past the main Valles Caldera entrance (between MM39 and 38).  Then the drivers will continue to the Fishing Access to leave all but one car.  There is a $2.50 fee per car if you have your Senior Pass; $5 without the pass.  (There are not always envelopes there).

Dear Mountaineers,

I am inviting you to attend the first Monday evening ski hill hike of the 2023 season.  We will meet at the ski hill parking lot at 5:30 pm and hike to the picnic table near the ski lift.  This is a potluck event, so please bring food to share.  You will need to bring your own drinks, plates, and cutlery.

Also, come prepared for the weather that can change rapidly.  If the weather situation is not satisfactory for hiking, i.e. torrential rain and lightning, I will send out a message by 4:45 PM to cancel the trip.

Would you like to try backpacking, but do not have the gear?   Join PEEC/LAM for a beginner backpack trip.  PEEC has a full set of packs/tents/sleeping bags to borrow for this trip.

We will hike from the Santa Fe Ski Basin to Puerto Nambe (4.5 miles) and camp for one night.  There is a pre-meeting on Monday July 17 at 5:30 at PEEC, to go over the hiking plan, gear needed, and to borrow the gear that you need.  It will be important to try out packing your pack with your food, clothing, tent, etc. prior to hiking on Saturday.

This is my favorite hike for the hottest times of the year. It involves wading in and out of the Jemez River and getting totally wet. The plan is to hike down the East Fork of the Jemez from second crossing - the second point where the Jemez River crosses highway 4, coming from Los Alamos. We follow the trail until the trail climbs up out of the canyon, then continue along the canyon bottom, wading as necessary. Most of the hiking is still along rough trails, but one does get wet - which is the point on a hot day.

This is a repeat of a successful trip held in August 2022. I would not be scheduling it so early, but found when I checked that only one opening was still available for summer 2023. The upper Conejos offers access to the South San Juan wilderness via several trails on the west side of the Conejos, as well as the several trails upstream of Platoro Reservoir, such as the 3 Forks trail. One can explore the high country and high lakes, and as well hike along the Conejos itself. Fly fishing is a possibility – trip leader Bill might be able to share the river with a would-be angler or two.
