East Spanish Peak

We will be in La Veta, CO this weekend, and would welcome anyone who wants to join Evan and I in a climb of East Spanish Peak on Sunday. East Spanish Peak is the highest 12,000-foot peak in the US. Also the highest 11,000-foot peak. Also the highest 10,000-foot peak. From its summit, one drops to the plains and Kansas. The two Spanish Peaks are the prominent landmark that one sees driving south on I-25 from Pueblo, or from highway 160 going from Walsenberg to Alamosa. Details of the summit climb can be found here.

This is a day to get some Trad Leading practice at El Rito Trad. Some will want to TR the single-pitch routes. I planned to have us set Pedernal Cracks, Shoes for Industry, and Cave Woman for those who want to TR. A 60m rope just reaches the bottom for Pedernal Cracks and Cave Woman, which means when lowering someone you have to be watchful on the rope as the person being lowered nears the bottom. We will endeavor to get 70m ropes for these routes

 

 

I will have a club sign-in sheet. I'll have waivers for the non-club members who will be there.

Karl Buckendahl, a long-term friend of the Mountaineers, is part of a Grand Canyon backpack trip that is seeking additional members. They have five confirmed and are looking for up to three more people.  It is a good group of people and I know that our Los Alamos friends would enjoy hiking with them.  If you have time please put the word out and have them call Karl at 928 556 013 for more details.

Non Technical Local Canyon Gem

Escobas Canyon bisects the Pajarito Plateau separating Burnt Mesa from Escobas Mesa within the confines of Bandelier NM. It drains a large swath of land South of NM4 and funnels water into Frijoles Canyon. The canyon is rarely visited and its entrances are protected by NM locust, thistle and a variety of local shrubs that will leave their mark on those not properly clothed. Our track will start a few hundred yards E of the Ponderosa Campground. Car pools can be arranged by meeting at Sullivan Field at 08:00 on Sunday morning, and we will then travel to the TH at the Ponderosa Campground.

Pajarito mountain

Let's hike to the top of Pajarito mountain this Sunday.
We'll meet at 9 AM in the High School parking lot right next to the Lemon lot (NW side of the Canyon/Diamond intersection). We will carpool from there. We should be back around 12:30.
The hike climbs ~1000 ft to the top of Pajarito mountain.
We will break on top for lunch.
