All – it’s time for the Sierra Club and LA Mountaineers to celebrate the summer solstice with a hike and potluck!
Meet at 5:30 in the parking lot adjacent to the Pajarito Mountain Ski Lodge.  Since the available deck is adjacent to the top of the Spruce Lift, there are several options for hiking – up Aspen and back down to the top of Spruce Lift, up the Lone Spruce run, or up Zero Road east which zig-zags to the top of Spruce Lift.

Spanish Peaks/ Sugarite State Park

Date:

Difficulty:

Objective Oriented.
Overview: The objective is to complete a circuit that includes the summits of both West (13,500’) and East (12,650’) Spanish Peaks. The difficulty arises in that this circuit is approximately 15 mi in length with 7,000 feet of total vertical gain. We will leave Los Alamos mid morning on Friday June 8 and drive approximately 5 h to Cordova Pass Campground. If those working on that Friday are interested, it is close enough to drive after work and some arrangements could be made to facilitate your participation.

Los Alamos Mountaineers will host an eclipse-viewing hike to the top of Pajarito Mountain on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Meet at the base of the Aspen Lift at 5:30 p.m. We'll take a somewhat leisurely stroll to the top of the "Mother" lift and then on to the Steve Yeamans Memorial bench overlooking the Valle Grande. From that viewpoint we'll be able to see the annular eclipse of the Sun, weather permitting, as the sun sets. Let's share some food on the summit. We'll have a picnic and a party. But be ready for cool weather and possibly some sprinkles of rain and a bit of breeze.

As a warm-up to our May Canyon trip, I will be leading a slickrock exploration in the Ghost Ranch area. The outing is largely aimed for participants in an upcoming trip, but I would also welcome a few other folks who might be thinking about joining in a Utah outing in the future. Our May trip unfortunately filled privately before it could be offered to the Club, but I am planning an October 6-14 outing and hope to advertise it in the next several weeks.
