We’ve had urban brunch hikes before, but this one has a twist. We will finish the hike at the Co-op, who will be waiting for us with a catered brunch (not a potluck like before – no muss, no fuss). We will meet at the Larry Walkup pool parking lot at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning. After shuttling some cars to the Co-op, we will start the hike, taking the Ranch School Trail down to the Pueblo Canyon Trail, then following the canyon until the Tent Rocks Trail splits off to the south.
It seems that June is a bit crowded and there are some folks who would like to do this trip, but can't do it on June 16. My summer weekends are a bit packed, so I've decided to move this to late summer when it will be a bit cooler than July or August and we should be past the Monsoon Season.
Join Zack for an exploratory test of a new type of mountaineer's trip, the Blitzwanderung, or "lightning hike." Have you always felt that hiking was great, that all the scenery was quite lovely, but that it could be improved if the trees were kind of blurry and the scenery changed faster? Well, here is the solution for you. Following the German tradition, the Blitzwanderung attacks the mountain with a vengance.
What: 14 mile round trip from the Santa Fe Ski Basin to Santa Fe Baldy
This is a courtesy announcement for a private outing that is not under the auspices of the Mountaineers:
This will be a five-day backpack in beautiful Parunuweap Canyon (the East Fork of the Virgin River), in southwestern Utah, near Zion National Park. We'll drive to Kanab, Utah, on Saturday, September 1, and overnight there. The next morning, we'll place a car at Checkerboard Mesa, in Zion NP, the end point of our backpack. We'll then drive to our trailhead, south of Mt. Carmel Junction, and begin hiking.
Let's go for a 3 day backpack into the Truchas Peaks from Santa Barbara Campground above Penasco, NM!
Leave Friday morning, 8/24, at 8 am. The drive is about 90 minutes. Begin hike at 8000'. Hike 8 miles on the West Fork of the Rio Santa Barbara. Camp at 11,000 ft, below No Fish Lake. Saturday, rise early and follow the trail up to the saddle between North Truchas Peak and Chimayoso Peak. Continue on the ridge to North Truchase and Truchas Peaks, as time/weather allow. Return to camp. Hike out Sunday. Probably be back to Los Alamos around 4 pm Sunday afternoon.
Jan, Mary, my son, and I are going to try out the new ziplining setup at Angel Fire. We've made a reservation for the 11 AM slot on Saturday, August 18, and would like to invite other Mountaineers to join us. There are four remaining vacancies in the 11 AM tour, and we have not done anything to hold them, so please sign up soon if you would like to join us. Details of the Angel Fire setup can be found here.

12,409-foot Lake Peak is a classic hike for Los Alamos folks, and has been since Enrico Fermi and Hans Bethe made it a break from their Manhattan Project efforts. We will do it once again via a classic route: starting at the Santa Fe Ski Basin, we will climb the Windsor Trail to the saddle with Raven Ridge, follow the ridge to Deception Peak and then across the knife edge to Lake Peak, then drop down into the cirque of Nambe Lake, following its drainage to the intersection of the Windsor Trail and the way home.
