This is one of my favorite hikes in Los Alamos. We will meet at the trailhead at 8 am, about 1.5 miles north of the intersection of NM 501 and NM 4.The second half of the hike has a completely different feel than the first. It is a steady climb up 1700 ft over 4 miles to the rim of Valle Grande, and then we return along the same trail for a total of about 8 miles round trip.  It isn’t completely shaded, be prepared with sunscreen. Bring a hat, lunch, and plenty of water. There might be some rain, so bring rain gear and layers. It should take about 4 hours.

Heidi Rogers is opening her home in the Brazos to be a base for a weekend of hiking at Cumbres Pass and vicinity.   We will have some suggestions about possible hiking destinations.

Some of us who went to El Diente last summer have picked a new destination for this year:  Phoenix Peak, over the August 16-18 weekend.  Phoenix Peak (formerly called Unnamed 13,895') is in the eastern part of the San Juan mountains near Creede.   This peak is a high Thirteener in an area that does not see a lot of visitors.  It is one of the top 100 peaks in Colorado, so peak baggers take note!   However, it is technically easier and less rocky than most of the Centennial peaks, with most of the route being on trails or grassy slopes.

This is a scouting hike for the LAM August 16-18 weekend at the Brazos  If you can't make the weekend trip, come on the exploration on the 11th. As previously noted this is an exploratory hike. Consequently, participants will need to be adequately prepared and adaptable to potential changes in path and terrain.

Having postponed the Jicarita Peak hike on Saturday because of lightning risk, I'd like to propose a 10-mile out and back hike up Cebolla Canyon in the Jemez (500 ft elevation gain/loss), following the small stream. This is classic Jemez meadow scenery. The hike starts at the end of the road upstream from Seven Springs fish hatchery, and goes up the meadowed valley bottom. We might well get wet, but will not face the lightning risk that we would on a ridge top. We'll leave Los Alamos at 8 AM and return by dinner time, and will organize carpooling once we know who is going.

Surely the snow will be melted by mid July, so let's go on a 4 day backpack in the South San Juan Wilderness!

Leave Los Alamos, Thursday morning July 18th, and drive 4 hours to the Three Forks trailhead above Platoro, Colorado.  Hike to Blue Lake on Thursday afternoon, 5 miles 1200 ft elevation gain.  Hike to Glacier Lake on Friday, 4 miles 1000 ft elevation gain (this lake is above treeline).  Saturday - day hike up Conejos Peak (13,172 ft), 6 miles round trip 1000 ft elevation gain.   Sunday, hike 9 miles 2000 ft down back to cars, drive home, arriving ~7pm.
