Doug Scott's book on New Mexico slot canyons mentions a Talus Canyon at the south end of the Ghost Ranch area - see http://www.dougscottart.com/hobbies/SlotCanyons/TalusCan.htm. It seems worth an explore to me. Let's drive up Sunday and have a look, and practice our canyon skills. I'll bring a short rope to help the less experienced over anything that is medium steep, but the trip will not involve vertical climbing. We'll leave Los Alamos at 9:30 this Sunday morning, April 23.

Let's do a hike from north to south across Bandelier National Monument.

The hike will begin at Ponderosa campground.  We will hike down to the Upper Crossing in Frijoles Canyon and then up and out of the canyon to upper Alamo Canyon.  The hike turns east down Horse Mesa to the Stone Lions, then turns south into Capulin Canyon near the old (now burned) ranger cabin.  Then we will hike up and out of Capulin Canyon following the Boundary Peak Trail to the St. Peter's Dome road 142.

Let's hike the Ancho Canyon (aka Ancho Springs) Trail to Blue Dot Trail.  This is a 10 mile hike, starting on State Route 4, 4 miles south of White Rock.  The hike follows a dirt road on the mesa for ~1.5 miles, then drops 2 miles into White Rock Canyon to Ancho Rapid.  The route follows the river trail for 4-5 miles north, passing the Red Dot Trail onto the Blue Dot Trail.  Then the final 1 mile is uphill out of the canyon to the Overlook Park in White Rock.

Heidi Rogers is opening her home in the Brazos to be a base for a weekend of snowsports at Cumbres Pass and vicinity.   As of January 10th (could put in a later date, because it will snow all week!), there is beginner and intermediate X-C skiing or snowshoeing at the Edward Sargent's Wildlife Area, just north of the village of Chama.  And there are lots of options for beginner/intermediate/expert X-C and snowshoe tours at Cumbres and La Manga Passes.

Three of us are planning a weekend trip to Wolf Creek for skiing, and we'd like to invite anyone else who might be interested. I would leave early Saturday AM, so as to arrive at the ski area not too late, ski all date, overnight at a motel in Pagosa with perhaps some hot tubbing, ski again at Wolf Creek on Sunday and drive home. Let me know if you would like to join us. Bill

This is a major modification of a trip planned to go to the vicinity of the Brazos Overlook due to a sustained road closure on NM Hwy 64. Apparently, NM Hwy. 64 between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras has been closed for some time. It looked like it closed in late December and has not yet reopened. I checked today and the road is still closed, and with the prospect of additional snow this weekend I think the chance of it re-opening before Sunday are slim to none.
