Would you like to try backpacking, but do not have the gear?   Join PEEC/LAM for a beginner backpack trip.  PEEC has a full set of packs/tents/sleeping bags to borrow for this trip.

We will hike from the Santa Fe Ski Basin to Puerto Nambe (4.5 miles) and camp for one night.  There is a pre-meeting on Monday July 17 at 5:30 at PEEC, to go over the hiking plan, gear needed, and to borrow the gear that you need.  It will be important to try out packing your pack with your food, clothing, tent, etc. prior to hiking on Saturday.

This is my favorite hike for the hottest times of the year. It involves wading in and out of the Jemez River and getting totally wet. The plan is to hike down the East Fork of the Jemez from second crossing - the second point where the Jemez River crosses highway 4, coming from Los Alamos. We follow the trail until the trail climbs up out of the canyon, then continue along the canyon bottom, wading as necessary. Most of the hiking is still along rough trails, but one does get wet - which is the point on a hot day.

This is a repeat of a successful trip held in August 2022. I would not be scheduling it so early, but found when I checked that only one opening was still available for summer 2023. The upper Conejos offers access to the South San Juan wilderness via several trails on the west side of the Conejos, as well as the several trails upstream of Platoro Reservoir, such as the 3 Forks trail. One can explore the high country and high lakes, and as well hike along the Conejos itself. Fly fishing is a possibility – trip leader Bill might be able to share the river with a would-be angler or two.

We would like to schedule another climbing day for the graduates of this year’s Climbing School.  The goal is to introduce the graduates to other Mountaineers and to another of our favorite local climbing areas.   This trip will be back to Tres Piedras, where the Climbing School was held, but we will be climbing mostly on nice moderate routes in the back rocks.

update 6/23: I announced a Mountaineers hike for Saturday and would like to carry one out. However, I have learned that Forest Road 144 is nearly impassable, so I’d like to offer an alternative. This is my favorite hike for the hottest times of the year. It does involve some wading. The plan is to hike down the East Fork of the Jemez from second crossing - the second point where the Jemez River crosses highway 4, coming from Los Alamos. We follow the trail until the trail climbs up out of the canyon, then continue along the canyon bottom, wading as necessary.

Drawing on a hike in the classic guide by the Salzmans (number 41), let’s explore a loop in the Jemez that starts at Porter, where the Rio Guadalupe is crossed by a bridge, then explores up Stable Canyon, comes out the top, then traverses Schoolhouse Mesa and descends Schoolhouse Canyon to return to the cars. This is a route through meadows and forest that totals 9 miles and climbs 1200 feet. We expect to hike at a slow to moderate pace, but this is a healthy distance to cover. The weather looks clear and promising, but be ready for whatever the skies might deal out.

I would like to invite recent climbing school graduates on a descent of Pajarito Gorge in White Rock. Others are invited too, but the 2023 climbing school students get priority. This is not a class or workshop… just a canyon descent. Prior on-rope experience is required, but not canyoneering experience. I will go over some subtleties with single rope rappelling since that probably wasn’t part of the climbing school. This canyon has four rappels, longest is 120 feet. Your feet may get wet during the descent. The hike out has a bit of 3rd class scrambling in the sun.

8.6 miles loop around Banco Bonito which hugs the Western edge of the beautiful El Cajete meadow on Saturday June 3, 2023.

Expected ride time: around 3 hours.

Driving time: 45 minutes each way.

Easy pace: mile 3 is a long uphill on somewhat rugged double track: walking parts of it is ok.

Before leaving home, please ensure that your bike is in good working condition and that you have basic repair equipment (e.g., spare tube and pump).

Bring water, snack and perhaps a rain coat in case the rain comes early.
