For the second in our series of hikes, let's up the anty a bit and go for some big elevation gain.

We'll head to Albuquerque and hike the La Luz Trail. We've been wanting to do this for a long time and every time we plan a trip it is closed. Fingers crossed that we'll get to see the wonderful views of Albuquerque along the way and at the top.

This is a rigorous hike, 7.5 miles each way, that hiking books estimate at 9-12 hours.

Some of us are getting ready for some fun Mountaineering. We're going to be doing a series of hikes and outings. We'll start easy.

Let's go hike Chicoma Mountain, the highest peak in the Jemez Mountains. We'll take a meandering drive out forest roads to get to the trail. We'll hike 3 miles roundtrip with 1,100' of elevation gain and 1,100' of elevation lost - no work at all.

Looking forward to a scenic visit to a place I have never been.

On the heels of a wonderful visit this September, I have arranged a return to Gallina Canyon Ranch next Memorial Day weekend.   I know of no place that is this remote and yet so close - just 2 - 2 1/2 hours - from Los Alamos.

Canyoneering is one of my favorite outdoor activities, and I look forward to the annual Zion National Park trip.  That is an amazing experience.  But, I hunger for other adventures.  After the Zion trips, I have been exploring the Escalante region with Laura and Roy Bohn.  And I’ve been exploring Moab canyons with Melanee and David Hand.  The five of us have decided to explore more of Utah this May.

Doug Scott's book on New Mexico slot canyons mentions a Talus Canyon at the south end of the Ghost Ranch area - see http://www.dougscottart.com/hobbies/SlotCanyons/TalusCan.htm. It seems worth an explore to me. Let's drive up Sunday and have a look, and practice our canyon skills. I'll bring a short rope to help the less experienced over anything that is medium steep, but the trip will not involve vertical climbing. We'll leave Los Alamos at 9:30 this Sunday morning, April 23.

Let's do a hike from north to south across Bandelier National Monument.

The hike will begin at Ponderosa campground.  We will hike down to the Upper Crossing in Frijoles Canyon and then up and out of the canyon to upper Alamo Canyon.  The hike turns east down Horse Mesa to the Stone Lions, then turns south into Capulin Canyon near the old (now burned) ranger cabin.  Then we will hike up and out of Capulin Canyon following the Boundary Peak Trail to the St. Peter's Dome road 142.
