Eclipse Viewing Hike Sunday, May 20, 2012

Los Alamos Mountaineers will host an eclipse-viewing hike to the top of Pajarito Mountain on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Meet at the base of the Aspen Lift at 5:30 p.m. We'll take a somewhat leisurely stroll to the top of the "Mother" lift and then on to the Steve Yeamans Memorial bench overlooking the Valle Grande. From that viewpoint we'll be able to see the annular eclipse of the Sun, weather permitting, as the sun sets. Let's share some food on the summit. We'll have a picnic and a party. But be ready for cool weather and possibly some sprinkles of rain and a bit of breeze.

As a warm-up to our May Canyon trip, I will be leading a slickrock exploration in the Ghost Ranch area. The outing is largely aimed for participants in an upcoming trip, but I would also welcome a few other folks who might be thinking about joining in a Utah outing in the future. Our May trip unfortunately filled privately before it could be offered to the Club, but I am planning an October 6-14 outing and hope to advertise it in the next several weeks.

Santa Fe Baldy Ski Trip

Join Zack for a ski ascent of Santa Fe Baldy meeting at De Vargas Center at 7:45 and the Santa Fe Ski Area parking lot at 8:30.  It's about 12 miles, so pack a lunch and bring skins. 
 
 

Caldera Ski Trip

 Join the Los Alamos Mountaineers for a 11 mile cross-country ski jaunt from the Pajarito ski hill parking lot to the Valles Caldera Visitor Center. We will leave the ski hill between 8-9am, traverse out to Canada Bonita, then descend the jeep trail into the Caldera. Finally, we will continue across the expanse of the Caldera to the visitor center and our carpool.
This is one of the few legal opportunities every year to see a large part of the Caldera backcountry. We will collect the $10 Caldera entry fee before we depart.
