TRIP POSTPONED FROM ORIGINAL JULY DATE DUE TO LIGHTNING RISK
NOTE: This is a regular Mountaineers trip with registration directly with the trip leader
Join PEEC and the Los Alamos Mountaineers to hike Jicarita Peak for the Northern New Mexico Peak Challenge! On Saturday, October 12 we will attempt the summit of 12,835-foot Jicarita Peak. This peak stands out at the northeast corner of the Pecos Wilderness, and is the northernmost of the Truchas complex of peaks that is visible on our eastern skyline. This is an extremely strenuous trip. The outing will be about 11 miles round-trip and will go up and down 2,500 feet of elevation change. Participants should be prepared and in shape for the challenge. There will be a required turn-around time and hikers will need to start back by that time, whether they have made the summit or not. Bill Priedhorsky of the Los Alamos Mountaineers will be the trip's leader.
October should be a great time of year for this trip, falling squarely in aspen season. The group will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 7:00 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead. The drive to the trailhead is about 2 hours. This will be an all-day outing and the group will return to Los Alamos in the early evening. Hikers should dress for the weather and wear layers. Conditions may range from a cold windy summit to a hot slog up the trail. Bring plenty of water and a hearty lunch, as well as sun protection including a hat and sunscreen. If you have hiking poles, please bring them.
In registering, participants will be asked about their experience in climbs of this nature. Those with insufficient experience can qualify for the hike by taking part in one of Bill Priedhorsky’s Monday evening Pajarito Mountain hikes. Like all such outings, this trip is subject to postponement in the face of an unfavorable weather prediction, or may be terminated by the trip leader if conditions deteriorate during the day.
Advance signup is required for this outing. Space is limited to 12 people, so reserve your place soon by contacting bill@priedhorksy.net.
