Canyoneering is one of my favorite outdoor activities, and I look forward to the annual Zion National Park trip. That is an amazing experience. But, I hunger for other adventures. After the Zion trips, I have been exploring the Escalante region with Laura and Roy Bohn. And I’ve been exploring Moab canyons with Melanee and David Hand. The five of us have decided to explore more of Utah this May.
The plan is to drive to the Capitol Reef National Park on May 8, camping either in the park or on BLM land. We will explore Cottonwood and Burro Canyons, by hiking above them and descending with ropes. One day is reserved for another adventure, not yet decided. We leave on May 12 for Escalante.
Travel to Escalante on May 12. Camp along Hole in the Rock Road. Descend Egypt 1, Egypt 3, Neon Canyon and Chop Rock Canyon. One day is reserved for other adventure, like non-technical canyons Spooky and Peek-a-Boo. Leave on May 18 for Los Alamos.
Travel to Capitol Reef from Los Alamos is 8 hours plus. Travel to Escalante from Los Alamos is about 10 hours. Travel between Capitol Reef and Escalante is 1 hour 40 minutes.
Participants must be familiar with canyoneering – ability to rappel with confidence is a must. Participants should also be comfortable car camping, either in a tent, van or camper. Motels are available in Torrey and Escalante, however. Whether dogs are allowed depends on the camping option.
