This cross-country ski tour to the Brazos Overlook is one of my faves, as the lunch spot is spectacular (see photo) and the kicking-n-gliding sublime (if the snow conditions are right)!
The trailhead is about a 2-hour drive from Los Alamos followed by a moderate 7-mile-roundtrip ski tour. The tour is suitable for those with an intermediate level of cross-country ski touring experience, and the route is rated easy to moderate.
Gear requirement: you must own crosscountry skis designed for the backcountry (ungroomed trails); specifically, your skis must have metal edges and fish scales. You shouldn't need skins for this route.
You should bring plenty of clothing layers, gloves, hat, sunscreen, water, lunch, etc.
Let's meet at the Sullivan field parking lot at 7:30 AM Sunday, cram into as few cars as possible, and depart by 7:45 AM. Also we can meet up (at Bode's) with other skiers from White Rock, Santa Fe, Espanola, etc.
