This is a trip to introduce folks who enjoy being in wild places to the mania of fly fishing. You should have some experience in backpacking and the necessary kit. You do not need to be an experienced fly fisher, but you will need a fly rod, reel, leader, tippet and imitation flys. Some exposure to fly fishing would be helpful but is not necessary. A pre trip planning and organizational meeting will be held Wednesday July 9th at the library at 5:30 a week in advance of the trip. The trip is limited to six participants. You need to be a member in good standing (dues paid) and have a club waiver on file. Status will be checked at the pre trip meeting. Recommendations for your fishing kit will be provided at that time as well. If you are interested send the Trip Leader an email to hold a spot. We will drive in two high clearance vehicles (I have one, another will be needed) from Los Alamos departing at a reasonable hour (tbd at the pre trip meeting) on Friday morning July 18th and return on Sunday evening July 20th. We will be camping and fishing in the Cruces Basin Wilderness Area in Northern New Mexico near Antonito Mountain. The technicality of the trip is listed as ‘Intermediate’ as you need to be comfortable and able to provide for yourself camping in the backcountry. The trip is listed as easy as the hike into the basin is only about a mile, descending a little over 500 feet from the TH at the end of FR572, but the trail is not routinely maintained and may require some tree hoping and route finding with a pack on.
