Canyoneering season is here. Perhaps you need some skills practice. Evan Rose and John Davey will set up some anchors at the White Rock Y (just east of the junction of NM4 and NM502). This area offers short drops and easy walk-ups back to the top of the ropes.
We will practice descending a rope using our personal gear - harness, rappel device, prusik, helmet and gloves. We will set single and double rope rappels. We will set rope blocks (carabiner blocks and contingency blocks) and practice pulling ropes. We will use VT prusiks for self-arrest and practice fireman belays. We will set simple anchors using webbing. If you have ascenders, we can practice ascending a rope. (Zion NP permits require this skill.)
Participants must be members of the Los Alamos Mountaineers and must sign a waiver. Nobody on this trip is a trained professional who is qualified to teach. We are gathering to practice. Canyoneering outfitters can be found through a web search, and it is highly recommended that canyoneers use those professionals to learn new skills.
