San Antonio Mountain is the very large dome just south of the Colorado line, seen to the west of highway 285 on the way north from Tres Piedras to Antonito CO. At 10,908 feet, it stands alone, a half mile above the sagebrush plains.  The hike will be a trailless climb of  2000 vertical feet and 5 miles round trip. From the top, we can look out for the long view over the Taos plateau. As of June 30, the weather looks promising, with the 5th seeming to fall in a relatively dry spell.

We will leave Los Alamos at 8:00 AM and drive to the start of the hike. This is a cross-country hike, starting from Forest Road 87 and working our way up the southwestern side of the mountain. Our target will be the southern, Antone Peak summit, a few feet lower than the northern summit but wilder - the radio towers are on the northern summit.  We will enjoy the views on the way, and have lunch at the top. Bring your lunch, hiking boots, and clothes suitable for whatever the weather throws at us. We can discuss bringing your well behaved dog.
