Drawing on a hike in the classic guide by the Salzmans (number 41), let’s explore a loop in the Jemez that starts at Porter, where the Rio Guadalupe is crossed by a bridge, then explores up Stable Canyon, comes out the top, then traverses Schoolhouse Mesa and descends Schoolhouse Canyon to return to the cars. This is a route through meadows and forest that totals 9 miles and climbs 1200 feet. We expect to hike at a slow to moderate pace, but this is a healthy distance to cover. The weather looks clear and promising, but be ready for whatever the skies might deal out. Bring lunch, water, and sun protection. We will leave Los Alamos at 8 AM, details to be organized with the participants. Please contact Bill Priedhorsky to take part.
