Have you wanted to go backpacking, but didn’t have the gear or experience? Or wanted more friends and kids along? This fall, PEEC will offer an easy-moderate backpacking trip, open to adults and families. The group will go on an overnight trip to Puerto Nambe in the Pecos Wilderness. Participants will meet at Los Alamos Nature Center on Saturday, August 20 at 9 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Expected return to the nature center is 5 PM on Sunday, August 21.
Backpackers should be in good physical condition and able to hike up to 6 miles per day, on average, carrying a moderately heavy pack at high altitudes. Children are welcome, but they must be accompanied by a parent (or other responsible adult) and willing/able to carry a small pack. The group will hike about 5 miles into the Pecos Wilderness from Santa Fe Ski Basin on the Winsor Trail. It is approximately 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Los Alamos to the trailhead.
The group will meet at the nature center at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, August 16 to go over gear, discuss food and clothing, and answer any questions. Essential backpacking gear, such as tents, sleeping bags, stoves, and backpacks will be coordinated at the program orientation. If needed, PEEC is able to provide equipment. PEEC’s backpacking tents are 2- and 3-person capacity tents, so you may be asked to share a tent with a same-sex buddy. Particularly well-behaved dogs could be allowed - contact Jean
Jean Dewart will lead this backpacking trip. Jean is an experienced local backpacker, hiker, skier, and kayaker.
