Exploring a Few New Mexican Volcanic Plugs

Tue, 2022-02-22

The February, 2022 Mountaineers meeting will feature a talk by Evan Rose. In November 2020, he spoke about my solo adventures at Lee’s Ferry and Vermilion Cliffs in Utah (see  That trip took place in March of 2020, just as COVID was taking hold.  In December 2020 and January 2021 Evan embarked on another set of solo adventures, this time exploring five of the volcanic plugs in an area south of Cuba NM that is part of the Mt Taylor volcanic field.  That tour inspired a trip that he led to Cabezon Peak for the Los Alamos Mountaineers in April 2021.  Evan will cover his approach to “plug bagging” and share his photos and routes.

Mountaineers’ meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month. When held in person, they take place in the planetarium of the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), 2600 Canyon Rd, Los Alamos, NM 87544. Recent meetings have been held electronically starting at 7:00 PM; the Mountaineers are considered when and how to return to in-person meetings. Registration for this event can be found at
