Join PEEC and the Los Alamos Mountaineers for an intermediate, point-to-point snowshoe or cross-country ski outing from the Las Conchas Trailhead to the East Fork Trailhead on Saturday, January 22. This trip will cover 4.5 miles and about 800 feet of elevation gain. It will be of intermediate difficulty and technicality and participants should be able to hike 5 miles in 2.5 hours comfortably and have previous experience snowshoeing or skiing. The use of snowshoes and skis will be weather-dependent. In the event of insufficient snow, this outing will change to a winter hike and micro-spikes (YakTraks or similar) may be recommended.
* Probably wearing micro-spikes and carrying snowshoes will be sufficient
Participants will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 9 AM or at 8:30 AM if you need to borrow snowshoes. We will carpool from the nature center for the 45 minute drive to the trailhead. It is helpful to have 4WD and shovels for digging out parking spaces, if needed. If you are coming from Albuquerque, you can meet us at the Los Conchas trailhead at 10 AM. We will drive some cars to the East Fork trailhead and leave them there for our return and then drive back to the Las Conchas trailhead and start snowshoeing. Carpooling is subject to current Covid safe practices.
PEEC has snowshoes to lend to participants if needed. Attendees will shuttle cars to the end-point and carpool back to the Las Conchas trailhead.
