Cerro Abrigo is a dome in the middle of the Valles Caldera preserve, circled with an old logging road. The route is 7.2 miles round trip with a gain of 1,515 feet. Coco Rae, in her book "Hiking Trails in the Valles Caldera National Preserve", says "Despite the heavy damage Cerros del Abrigo have suffered due to logging and fire, this is a delightful trail which contours around a lava dome after the initial ascent, offering impressive views of many of the Preserve's prettiest valleys." We will leave Los Alamos at 8 AM, drive to the preserve to get backcountry permits, and minimizing our number of cars either as we leave Los Alamos or at the entrance station so as to minimize our need for permits. The trailhead is about 7 miles into the Preserve past the entrance station. Bring the usual day hike gear: clothes for whatever the weather might bring us, sunscreen, water, lunch, etc. Please let Bill know of your interest at bill@priedhorsky.net. All participants must be fully vaccinated.
