Sorry, too little interest for this outing. I'd recommend the Canyon de Valle hike closer to home the same day. Bill

Since we had to cancel the backpack for this weekend of the 12th, let's do a high country day hike instead. Our outing will set out from the Taos Ski Valley road and ascends Gavilan Canyon to a summit of nearly 12,000 feet along the high ridge between Lobo Peak and Gold Hill, a climb of over 3000 feet over about 3.5 miles through the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness. Views from the top, above skyline, should be magnificent. The hike is described at http://www.taostrails.com/gavilan.html; we will go beyond the trail described there, hike an additional mile east to the summit, and if things are going well, continue to loop down via Long Canyon trail (http://www.taostrails.com/long_canyon.html), finishing up on Bull of the Woods trail to the ski area parking lot. Expect a quite strenuous hike with big views from the top.
We will leave Los Alamos at 7:30 AM Saturday morning and carpool approximately 1 ½ hours to the trailhead, setting up a short shuttle to the Bull of the Woods trailhead if we have more than one car. We may stop on the way back for dinner.
