Introduction to Canyoneering

  A Los Alamos Mountaineers Specialty Course & Trip to Zion National Park

Course is free for 2012 Climbing School students, $40 for all others

August 9th – Evening Session

  • What is Canyoneering
  • The canyon rating system
  • Clothing and technical equipment
  • Knots, hitches & bends
  • Canyoneering anchors
  • Canyoneering rigging
  • Rappelling skills
  • Problem solving as a group
  • Other hazards (potholes, flash floods, waterfalls)
  • How to get more instruction

 

August 11th – On-The-Rock Session

  • Practice canyoneering skills at a local crag (TBD)
  • Rigging, rappelling single strand, adjusting friction, locking off
  • Demonstration of other topics (guided rappels, knot passing, rescues)
  • Additional afternoon mini-trip through Pajarito Gorge (1 pothole, 4 rappels up to 120).

September 2nd – 8th

Trip to Zion National Park

  • A week of canyoneering, hiking and relaxing in beautiful Zion!
  • Trip details will be available mid to late July
