Climbing Ecuador's Volcanoes

Date

Rick Rubio will speak about climbing Ecuador’s volcanoes at the April 23 Mountaineers meeting. Rubio, along with five friends, climbed five of Ecuador’s volcanoes in December 2023, culminating with a climb of 6,263-meter (20,548 foot) Chimborazo. Chimborazo, 39th highest summit in the Andes, is farthest point on Earth's surface from the Earth's center, due to its location along the planet's equatorial bulge. It was the first mountain over 20,000 feet climbed by Europeans. The 1880 summit expedition was led by Edward Whymper, who was also the first to climb the Matterhorn.

Summiting New Mexico’s highest 186 peaks

Date

Phil Robinson will speak about New Mexico’s highest peaks at the March 26 Mountaineers meeting. While hundreds have summited all of the Colorado’s more than 50 14ers, the retired Albuquerque Public Schools science teacher is the only person who has hiked New Mexico’s highest 186 peaks (with the exception of a pair of 12,000-foot peaks in the Taos Pueblo.) He has hiked over 100 other peaks.

Potpourri

Date

The Los Alamos Mountaineers will host the annual Potpourri at Fuller Lodge starting at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.  Potpourri is a stew that consists of one part potluck and six parts ten-minute talks, simmered slowly in conversation and camaraderie. This is by far the most popular Mountaineers meeting of the year. Make your own early New Year's resolution to attend! The potpourri is a strictly in-person event, with no hybrid adjunct. It is the only meeting of the year not held at the Nature Center.

Off Trail Hiking in the Grand Canyon: Crystal / Phantom Creek Loop

Date

Mike Fugate will speak at the November 28 Mountaineers meeting. He writes: “My first backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon was in 1985.  Before the trip ended, I was hooked on Grand Canyon hiking.  After a few short backpacking trips on established trails, my interests turned to longer loop hikes in the remote backcountry, especially trips starting on the north rim.”

Rail diaries: Snowdonia

Date

Colin Hemez will speak at the October 24 Mountaineers meeting. He writes: “In the summer of 2022, I partook in a hiking trip through the mountains of northern Wales—an adventure enabled by Great Britain's extensive train network and venerable right to roam laws. In this talk, I'll share some photographs of the journey, discuss the history and future of walking in England, and reflect on the relationship between maps and the places they represent.”

Traversing the Wind River Range

Date

The July 25 Mountaineers meeting will be in-person, with a hybrid adjunct. Tanja Pietraß will speak about “Traversing the Wind River Range.”

With her friend David, Tanja cross the Wind Rivers on foot in August of 2022, starting at the Green Lakes and exiting at Big Sandy, covering about 86 miles. Despite the long drive (14 hours), climbing a wrong pass, a moose in camp, a run-in with a “bear”,  and daily rain showers, the Wind Rivers climbed to the top of her favorite mountain ranges.
