Adventures in the Alps: Mont Blanc and Matterhorn

Several days of acclimatization in the French and Swiss alps were spent climbing peaks and traversing glaciers to prepare for ascents of Mont Blanc and Matterhorn. And, we experienced fabulous weather and good health, and drank quite a bit of Génépi and overidulged on gelato. This talk describes the gorgeous setting and routes for our two weeks of alpine climbing.

On December 25th 2015, Margie Root and Joshua Payne stood on top of Aconcagua, 22,841 feet above sea level after 10 days on the mountain. Margie and Joshua were treated to one of the best Christmas presents a mountaineer could hope for: a nearly 7,000-meter summit with crystal clear, warm, and calm weather! We had an amazing time, made some new friends, and pushed ourselves to the limits.

There will be a slideshow and presentation about the Conchas fire and the floods of 2011 and 2013, how the back country and trails were affected, and where Bandelier is in rebuilding the trail system. Benedict was born and raised in the Netherlands (Holland), 5,200 miles away from the Grand Canyon, surrounded by green rain-soaked pastures in a country where the highest hill is 300 feet and the closest mountains are over 600 miles away.
