"The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful"

A History of the Los Alamos Mountaineers

by Norbert Ensslin

The Los Alamos Mountaineers were founded in 1952 by a small group of mountain climbers and friends with a love of the outdoors.  Since that time, via monthly meetings, speaker programs, the annual climbing school, and many hundreds of scheduled trips, the Mountaineers have served as a focal point for people who share outdoor interests.  Through club activities and private trips organized by the members, the Mountaineers have played an important part in the lives of many people in Los Alamos and the surrounding communities for over 55 years now.

Norbert Ensslin has assembled a history of the Los Alamos Mountaineers, which is posted on the club's website under LAM HISTORY INDEX on all page menus.  Norbert moved to Los Alamos and joined the Mountaineers in 1973, and has had the opportunity to visit many beautiful areas on club trips.  For the history, he interviewed some of the club's senior members, who contributed a few early photographs, many valuable documents, and a number of great stories from past adventures.  This program will present highlights from the club's many mountain climbing, rock climbing, hiking, camping, and skiing trips in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and other more distant areas.  The program will also review some of the bad accidents that have occurred over the years, so that today's mountaineers can learn from these past events.  Hopefully the history of the Mountaineers, both good and bad, will remind outdoor enthusiasts of the many beautiful areas and exciting activities that are still available for them to enjoy.
