David Breashears recreates the tragic circumstances
that resulted in eight deaths on Everest in May 1996. Breashears
was on Everest, shooting an IMAX film, and his firsthand experience of
the deadly storm that swept up from the Bay of Bengal allows him to
acutely simulate its violent intensity. The fascination of the
film, however, lies not in the scenes of howling gales and stranded
climbers-we already know those details from the many books and articles
published over the past decade-but in its wholly objective tone.
The film tells the story in the words of those who survived the tragedy,
their versions of events related simply and frankly without accusation
or judgment. Dr. Beck Weathers, Makalu Gau and Charlotte Fox are
especially eloquent. After years of acrimony, the time was ripe to
bring closure and equilibrium to the subject.
