If you come to the Los Alamos Moutnaineers' 70th anniversary potluck at Urban Park from 5 to 8 PM on Saturday 9/17/2022, please bring your unneeded and intact tents, tarps, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, bivy bags, boots and shoes, wool socks, gloves and mittens, jackets, warm pants, and sweaters for men, women, and children.
We will distribute these much needed supplies to local homeless shelters. Gear and clothing may be gently used but should be clean and intact.
Demonstration of how to use phone apps for navigation, with emphasis on GaiaGPS app. How to select and download maps and routes prior to a trip. How to record and save tracks, insert photos, etc. Tips on organizing and viewing your saved tracks.
Meet at Urban Park picnic tables at 4 pm before the potluck.
As part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the Los Alamos Mountaineers, join Michael Altherr for a demonstration of avalanche transceivers and practice. Michael will bring LAM owned transceivers and bring your own if you have one. The operation of transceivers will be discused and a practice exercise will be done.
Meet at the picnic tables at Urban Park at 3 pm on Saturday September 17. The session will go for about an hour, so that folks can participate in the GAIAGPS demo at 4pm. Then stay for the potluck at 5-8 pm.
This trip is part of the 70th Anniversary celebration. Weather dependent. Four rappels up to 120’ long, with some free hanging. Strenuous hike out on loose/steep rock field with some 4th class scrambling. (You might get wet in the canyon.)
Pre-requisite: prior experience rappelling and using technical canyoneering/climbing gear and willingness to carry shared gear and equipment (including ropes). Also, willingness to help manage and pull ropes.

Participate in the Los Alamos High School Homecoming parade and represent the Mountaineers as we celebrate the club's 70th anniversary.
We will meet on 9/16/2022 at 2 PM at parade staging area at the Mari Mac Village parking lot onto Central Avenue and walk the parade route down Central Avenue. Look for the Mountaineers banner.
Bring your creative mountaineering outfits/gear to showcase in the parade.
This trip is part of the 70th Anniversary celebration. The group will meet at the Sullivan Parking Lot at 7:30am and will carpool to Taos Ski area. From the trailhead, we will hike to Williams lake and continue to Wheeler Peak, 13,167 ft, the highest peak in New Mexico. It is a strenuous 8.5 miles, there and back hike, with ~3000 ft elevation gain. It takes on average 6 hours to complete. We will return to Los Alamos around 6-7pm. Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch, and dress according to weather conditions.
The White Rock Canyon Rim Trail is a family friendly 2.7 mile out and back. The trail has beautiful views of the canyon and the Rio Grande River. There is little shade along this hike. Dogs must be leashed at all times while in the trailhead area and on trail. Bring your Passport to the Pajarito Plateau if you need to mark off this hike.
Please RSVP. We will meet at the Blue Dot Trailhead parking lot at 9am. Anyone wishing to carpool from Los Alamos can meet at Sullivan Field at 8:20.
This family friendly hike is along a section of the East Fork Trail. It is a 3.2 mile out and back that meanders next to the East Fork of the Jemez River. The trail crosses the river numerous times, on wooden bridges, and has reasonable shade. Parts of the trail have overhanging thorn bushes. Dogs must be leashed at all times while in trailhead area and on trail. Bring your Passport to the Pajarito Plateau if you need to mark off this hike.

Have you wanted to go backpacking, but didn’t have the gear or experience? Or wanted more friends and kids along? This fall, PEEC will offer an easy-moderate backpacking trip, open to adults and families. The group will go on an overnight trip to Puerto Nambe in the Pecos Wilderness. Participants will meet at Los Alamos Nature Center on Saturday, August 20 at 9 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Expected return to the nature center is 5 PM on Sunday, August 21.
Overnight backpacking near Red River: Columbine trail
This is an overnight backpack out and back via Columbine Canyon.
We will leave Los Alamos around 8am On Saturday. It is about 2 hour drive on pavement. Starting at Columbine campground trailhead, we will hike up the steep trail for 5 miles with about 2000 feet gain. The trail follows the beautiful Columbine Creek. After setting up camp, we may have time to look for mushrooms nearby.
