Pico Orizaba

Glacier de Jamapa (North Route)

Beta Images Slide Show

This is the first high-altitude (18,850', 5747m) experience for many North American climbers. To climb higher than this on the continent, one must go to Alaska (Denali) or Canada (Mt. Logan), both of which are far more serious undertakings. This is a much superior climb to the other two big volcanoes near Mexico city. While undeniably a snow slog with no technical challenges, the beauty and exotic nature of the setting makes this almost a must-do for the aspiring high-altitude climber. its popularity is enhanced by the fact that the best season is winter, when the other altitude challenges on the continent are out of the question to all but serious masochists.
