High on Boulder (Wyoming) |
Beta Images Slide Show
This 4 to 5 pitch cascading frozen waterfall is located in one of the most concentrated collections of climbable ice in the lower 48 states, along the South Fork of the Shoshone River in northwest Wyoming . Visitors to the annual Cody Ice Festival generally report that the curiously named "High on Boulder" route is the best in the area. Although not the most difficult route in the valley, its impressive appearance and consistent quality pitches make it the most sought-after climb in in the region. Consistingly mostly of class-WI4 pillars connected by rolling lower-angled sections, the climb is notable for the thickness and quality of its ice. It presents the most challenging pitch at the end, a sustained vertical pillar. |
