South San Juan Mountains, Colorado

Adams Fork of the Conejos River

July 15-17, 2011

Trip Leader and Author: Jean Dewart.

Jackie Little, Chris Horley, and I had a terrific weekend backpack to the South San Juan Wilderness on July 15-17.  We left LA at 8:30 am on Friday, and were on the trail on the Adams Fork of the Conejos River at 12:30.

Green, cool, lots of water in the river and side streams.  We hiked for about 4 hours and made camp at 11,000 ft.

We hiked up to the Continental Divide trail on Saturday and made an attempt on Summit Peak, but a rain shower chased us off before we reached the top.  No matter, it was a delightful walk in the sky.

We shared the Adams Fork valley with elk, deer, coyotes, marmots, and ptarmigan.  Hiked out Sunday and home around 4 pm. Great trip!
