Climbing Lizard Head via the SW Chimney Route (5.8), Colorado

September 13, 2008

Author: Scott Hsu

Participants: Amy Bauer and Scott Hsu

Lizard Head is regarded by many to be Colorado's hardest 13er, first climbed by Ellingwood and Hoag in 1920, a climb that was far ahead of its time.  Amy and I enjoyed a gorgeous day in the San Juans (with fresh snow) and are happy to have both reached the spectacular summit and returned home safely.

Please click here for a full trip report with pictures.  Also, for a bit of Lizard Head mountaineering history, I recommend reading Ellingwood's own account of his first ascent via the west face and also George Bell's eminently readable account of his climb via the standard SW Chimney route (with Jennifer Roach and John Prater).
