We will be in La Veta, CO this weekend, and would welcome anyone who wants to join Evan and I in a climb of East Spanish Peak on Sunday. East Spanish Peak is the highest 12,000-foot peak in the US. Also the highest 11,000-foot peak. Also the highest 10,000-foot peak. From its summit, one drops to the plains and Kansas. The two Spanish Peaks are the prominent landmark that one sees driving south on I-25 from Pueblo, or from highway 160 going from Walsenberg to Alamosa. Details of the summit climb can be found here. Access is from the north side, not far from La Veta town. We will leave La Veta at about 8 AM. The climb is 3400 feet and 11 miles round trip; 800 feet less if we can make it into the upper trailhead.
I am not arranging lodging for this trip. There is camping near La Veta in Lathrop state park or south of Cuchara in Forest Service campgrounds, as well as lodging options in town like the La Veta Inn. If you are in town the evening before, you can join us for dinner.
This will be a strenuous but interesting climb up a prominent landmark. I hope you can join us.
