How do you judge the condition of a climbing rope?

After we've left our mother, is there any more important umbilicus beyond the one binding the leader to the belayer? How do you evaluate the quality of that cord before the adrenaline of jumping on a climb takes control? Sure, you can run your hand along it: checking it for obvious mashes, cuts and abrasions. It could be dirty, but is a rope that's been run through the washer and hung in the garage to dry any better? The UIAA gives every rope an acceptable number of falls based on some interesting mechanical tests. How many falls on top rope is equivalent to a UIAA fall.

Rattle snake on 5.6 at Overlook

I'm posting this to the forum area for Elizabeth Kelly.

Just an FYI that today, Tuesday, October 1, there was a small rattlesnake in the horizontal crack/handhold, which is about one foot above the second bolt on the 5.6 climb on the lower rock. Fortunately, I saw the snake just before I was going to use the handhold.

We have had lots of reports of rattlesnakes in our area northwest of Santa Fe (one under someone's bed - fortunately dead).

Be careful out there.

High resolution photo of Everest region of Nepal

[From Don Krier]

We gave a little talk about our November trek in the Everest region of Nepal.  Today I found this wonderful photograph by D. Breashears, a cinematographer, that is truly a marvelous thing.  You can zoom in incredibly close and pan up and down the Khumbu valley.  There are climbers and tents way up and back on the farthest face you can see.

vehicle ground clearance - how much is enough?

[From Reid Priedhorsky]
Mountaineers,

You all seem like the type of crowd who might be able to answer this
question.

We are looking at new cars, and one question we have is, how much ground
clearance is useful to get around dirt roads on the way to trailheads?
We're not thinking crazy epic jeep trails, but we want to be able to go
to reasonably out of the way places in something that also gets decent
mileage on the highway.
